According to the American Dental Association, men don’t care near as much for their smiles as women do. They are less likely to seek preventive care and they are also less likely to take proper care of their smiles. This is a big issue because men are still vulnerable to every dental issue in the world today. So, if you are a man who tends to avoid dental care and oral hygiene, our South Jackson Family Dental team asks you to change your ways, especially because the following things can increase your chances of having a weak and vulnerable smile:

Dry mouth is a common dental issue that is often caused by medications. So, if you experience a dry feeling in your mouth on occasion, it’s best to do all you can to rehydrate. The most beneficial things you can do to prevent dry mouth are:

-Avoid drinking alcohol
-Avoid using tobacco products
-Use alcohol-free mouthwash daily
-Chew sugar-free gum
-Avoid eating salty foods

Tobacco use
Tobacco products, like cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and chewing tobacco, are extremely damaging to your smile, oral health, and even your life. This is because tobacco tends to create gum disease and oral cancer, which are severely dangerous diseases. It’s best to avoid these problems at all costs by quitting the habit and avoiding tobacco products altogether. It’s also important to keep up with your six month checkups so you can increase your chances of having a strong and successful oral health.

Playing sports
If you participate in a high-contact sport or activity, your smile may be in danger. With the many hard, forceful objects that are involved in sports, there is a high chance that your oral cavity can be injured. So, to prevent tooth loss, tooth fractures, and jaw misalignments, it’s best to protect your oral health with a mouthguard.
